I discovered the Giovanni D:TOX System Replenishing Facial Moisturizer during a skincare sale event at Whole Foods.

I paid less than $10 for it, although I threw away the receipt before recording the exact price. At the time, I was looking for an affordable facial moisturizer with a botanical-focused formula and did not want to spend more than $20 to $30 on a basic face cream.

Giovanni marketed this as a day-or-night moisturizer formulated with green tea, fig, acai and goji berry extracts. Rather than relying on those marketing claims, I evaluated it based on its texture, absorption, scent and how it performed on my combination skin with dry areas.

Texture and application

The moisturizer had a thick, creamy consistency.

It felt heavier than a lightweight daytime lotion when I first applied it, and it took longer to settle into my skin. When I used a generous layer at night, the cream remained noticeable for approximately 15 to 20 minutes before the heavier sensation subsided.

Once it had settled, it did not leave my skin feeling excessively oily or greasy.

I used a thinner layer during the day, particularly when I planned to wear makeup. Applying less product made it more comfortable and reduced the time I needed to wait before beginning my makeup application.

Moisturizing performance

My skin was combination-dry at the time, and I often experienced dry patches when wearing mineral foundation.

This moisturizer helped those dry areas feel softer and made my mineral makeup apply more evenly. It was especially useful when my skin felt tight or parched.

For nighttime use, I preferred applying a slightly thicker layer. During the day, a smaller amount provided enough moisture without feeling overly heavy beneath foundation.

Although it worked well for my skin, I would not assume that it will perform the same way for every skin type. Someone with consistently oily skin may find the texture richer than necessary.

Formula

The moisturizer contained several emollient and moisturizing ingredients, along with botanical extracts such as green tea, fig, acai and goji berry.

I was initially drawn to the botanical ingredients because they aligned with my skincare preferences at the time. However, the performance of a moisturizer depends on its complete formulation rather than the presence of one fruit or plant extract.

I would also evaluate the whole formula rather than assuming that a product is safer or more effective simply because it is described as natural.

Readers should check the ingredient list printed on the current package, particularly if they have known sensitivities or allergies.

Scent

The scent was a light fragrance scent during application, but it faded quickly and did not remain prominent on my skin. 

Skin reaction

I did not notice new breakouts or irritation while I was testing this moisturizer. That was important to me because my skin could be sensitive and prone to occasional blemishes.

Final thoughts

For a moisturizer that cost less than $10, the Giovanni D:TOX Replenishing Facial Moisturizer performed well for me.

Its strongest qualities were its creamy texture, comfortable finish and ability to soften the appearance of dry patches beneath mineral makeup. It was not exceptionally lightweight, but I could adjust the amount depending on whether I was using it during the day or at night.

I would have considered repurchasing it as an affordable moisturizer for combination skin with dry areas. Someone who prefers weightless gel creams or completely fragrance-free skincare may not enjoy it as much.

This review reflects my personal experience with the version I purchased. Results may differ depending on skin type, climate, skincare routine and any changes made to the formula.
